Village voice media and Phoenix New Times was cofounded by Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey .The two journalists fund support groups that advocate for human, civic participation, freedom of speech, and migrants rights. Their main source of funds for the project is the money that was settlement of their arrest on 18th October 2007 by Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were forcefully removed from their homes in Phoenix area and shoved into unmarked vehicles and later booked into different jails. Larkin says that he was taught at a young age that it is mandatory to share with the less fortunate and that he could not think of a more deserving group than the Mexican migrants.
Amnesty International is a non-governmental organization that focuses on human rights protection. The main goal of Amnesty is to do research and provide solutions to end human rights abuse and obtaining justice for all. It provides a forum for providing donations that support immigrants. It supports migrants who have been displaced due to war, natural disasters and persecution.
The organization is present in forty countries across the world. The organization supported immigrants after the Gulf war. The organization launched an emergency shelter in the year 2000 offering education and sanitation programs for the refugees. It has since grown in West Africa since 2003, serving the growing population of refugees in the region as a result of civil conflict.
Civil rights refer to full and equal treatment economically, socially, and legally regardless of one’s gender, age, religion, or ethnicity. The Association of Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) works to ensure human dignity for refugees.
The organization opposes existing laws in Israel that do not observe the people’s civil rights. These include laws on access to citizenship, access to legal proceedings, and laws that bind migrants to their employers (a form of modern slavery). The organization is working towards abolishing such laws in Israel.
