When people think of McDonald’s partnerships, they think about Coca-Cola. Everyone knows that Coke tastes better at McDonald’s for some reason. Honestly, Coca-Cola isn’t McDonald’s most successful partnership. That title belongs to OSI Group, a company the public knows little about.

The OSI Group began as Otto & Sons, a little butcher shop in Chicago in 1909. Otto Kolschowsky founded the butcher shop with the intention of one day handing it over to his children. While he was alive, he saw his local shop grow into a regional success.

The crucial change in Otto & Sons’ history is meeting Ray Kroc. Ray Kroc approached the brothers about joining a venture he believed would be successful. By the 50s, Richard and Maurice McDonald already had a successful restaurant, but Kroc wanted something more than one location. He needed suppliers to build the empire of his dreams and Otto & Sons’ made the perfect partner.

The first official McDonald’s, Golden Arches and all, opened in 1955. The brothers joined Kroc’s ventures and became one of the hundreds of suppliers that McDonald’s used. Over the next 20 or so years, Otto & Sons invested heavily in bringing cryogenic freezing technology to their business.

Once up and running, they were able to supply McDonald’s needs much faster than everyone else. McDonald’s began dropping suppliers and stayed in business with only four U.S. suppliers. While McDonald’s evolved into a multinational success in front of the world’s eyes, Otto & Sons’ recognition came in more humble forms.

In 1975, grew into a worldwide success, alongside McDonald’s, and transformed into OSI Industries. Now, OSI Group is a multibillion-dollar conglomerate with offices and subsidiaries in dozens of countries. Under the senior leadership of OSI Group’s CEO, Sheldon Lavin, OSI has executed many key acquisitions concerning key working capital, subsidiaries, and companies involved in the food industry.

OSI Group’s procuring in August, 2016, of Baho Food, helped infuse this Dutch food company into OSI Group’s European portfolio. It was this key purchase, which provided OSI Group with a stronger corporate presence in Europe.

By purchasing Baho Foods, the OSI Group inherited five subsidiaries. Some of these five entities had processing plants located not only in Germany, but also in the Netherlands. These five companies include Gelderland Frischwaren, Q Smart Life, Bakx Foods, Vital Convenience, and Henri van de Bilt. These five companies provide food services in Europe, which are part of a business network of 16 companies.

OSI Group also purchased the Tyson Food plant in June, 2016. This plant, which was located in Chicago, Ill., was bought by OSI Group for $74 million. A spokesman for OSI group noted that the 200,000-square-foot location, which is situated in the Back of the Yards locale, is close to OSI Group’s Chicago facilities.

The Tyson Food facility by OSI was a move that will help OSI Group by utilizing this new infrastructure to stimulate business growth. Sheldon Lavin has a degree in Accounting and Finance. This degree enabled him to have a career in investment. He also owned his own finance consulting company. His finance consulting company lead him into the meat industry over 43 years ago, when he consulted with a company called Otto & Sons. Otto & Sons eventually became OSI Industries, that Sheldon became part owner of.

1970 is when he got involved with Otto & Sons, in 1995 is when it became OSI Group. In 1975 Sheldon started to expand overseas. OSI now reaches 17 countries and is considered an entrepreneurial company.

Sheldon states that the vision of the company, that will continue when he retires, is to remain a global company with profitable growth. Sheldon holds several positions in companies and charities alike. Some of his accomplishments consist of Chairman and CEO of OSI, President of OSI International Foods LTD, General trustee of Rush University Medical Center and Director of National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

He is also the Director at the Northeast Bank, President and Director of the Sheba Foundation. He holds a chairman’s position at the Drexel National Bank of Chicago. Sheldon contributes to numerous charities. Such charities consist of, but not limited to: Jewish United Fund, Evans Scholarship Fund, Ronald McDonald House Charities and The National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Over the years, Sheldon Lavin received several awards not only for h is business ventures, but for his non-profit activities as well. In 2013 OSI received the British Safety Council’s Globe of Honour Award. The company also won this award in 2015 and 2016. In 2015, Sheldon received the lifetime achievement award. David McDonald attended the Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in Animal Science. He immediately ventured into his professional career and joined the OSI Group Industries.
